Oxley Park
A model of Oxley Park, Milton Keynes, showing a development of low cost eco homes. One row of houses is arranged as a terrace and borders the main road, while detached houses line the side roads. The houses have roof mounted solar panels. There is a courtyard used as car parking surrounded by houses on all sides, with an access passageway from the main road. One half of the model is undeveloped land, with the foundations for the houses marked out but not built. Trees line the roads and behind the houses and model vehicles and pedestrians are present throughout the model. Each house has working lights (wired to standard plug).
This model shows one of the winning designs in the Design for Manufacture Competition launched by Deputy PM John Prescott in 2005 and run by English Partnerships. The competition aimed to demonstrate it was possible to build an environmentally sustainable home for £60,000 and was a response to the major increases in construction costs in recent years. Architects Rogers Stirk Harbour & Partners and builders Taylor Wimpey were one of the four winners and their homes were built at Swanson Drive, Oxley Park. They kept construction costs down by pre-fabricating timber frames for walls, ceilings and floors, and standardising the “working” parts such as heating and plumbing for pre-fabrication as well.
